Topic > The Negative Effects of the Social Media Veil

Social media is used as a veil for attackers to hide behind, hiding their true identity to feel more powerful and in control. By having a secret identity, bullies are more likely to speak in a tone of incivility that they otherwise wouldn't. Maria Konnikova puts it perfectly: “The moment you lose your identity, the usual constraints on your behavior also disappear.” (Konnikova) Without face-to-face interactions, the Internet is used as a means of long-distance communication to blatantly insult and intimidate others instantly from anywhere in the world. Attackers who use the Internet for their attacks are not afraid of physical contact from their victim. The lack of emotional involvement in electronic communication in cyberspace has made it possible for people to have thoughtless conversations. Such conversations often involve very personal topics that would not otherwise be discussed in person. These types of communications in cyberspace are free of feelings of shame and guilt and have little or no effect on the people involved. Anonymity also leads to bolder and more frequent social media attacks. With the ability to access the Internet at any time, cyberbullying can now occur 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Constant access to the Internet further expands the reach of cyberbullying.
