Topic > Racism in Children - 853

For my project I originally intended to write a simple children's book to raise awareness about racism and ethnic differences in young children. This idea did not meet my expectations, so I decided to show my grandchildren a short educational video on racism awareness in children. I believe that if mindfulness was taught at a young age, racism would not be an issue when the children were older. In women's studies, I learned about many systems of inequality and privilege between classes. I think that if the awareness of non-judgment was brought to children, it could influence the lives of many men and women in the future and eliminate racism and stereotypes. In today's American culture and society, raising a generation to support equality is crucial in our society's transition into the future. During my research on ways to raise children's awareness of racism and inequality and how children view their peers, I discovered an interesting site with an abundant amount of information on how to address a child when he questions the point of society's view of race and/or is called a derogatory term or vice versa. I found this very useful for my daughter's future. “We can choose to actively influence the attitudes of our children” (Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund, 1995, p. 1). Children see the world through the lives of their parents, teachers and mentors. Whether a person knows it or not, a child imitates the actions performed by authority figures in his or her life, even if these actions are in that person's subconscious. Another interesting phenomenon I discovered in my research is that children have an unconscious bias that their own race is more superior than any other. It is unknown whether this is taught or innate. ...... middle of paper ...... our vision of every race, religion and ethnicity in America and teaching these children not to be racist or unequal towards others will give America a better future and a brighter future for those children too. Being able to communicate and work sophisticatedly with diverse individuals is a necessity in their work life to be successful.
