Slavery“War is barbarism at best... Its glory is all moonshine... War is hell. (Union General William Tecumseh Sherman) A wise quote from an even wiser man, The Civil War was considered “hell.” For four years (1862-1865) a war was fought between the states of the Northern Union and those of the Southern Confederacy over the issue of slavery. During this period many changes occurred in the United States; the election of an anti-slavery president, the southern states seeking to secede to become their own independent country. These factors and many others, including slavery, were major causes of the Civil War. In the beginning, slavery was the main income for the southern states. Many argue that tobacco or cotton were major profits for the Southern states, but we all agree that without slavery there would have been no crops of either commodity. Southern states would believe that slavery was acceptable; they would do so by scaring people into believing that “Defenders of slavery argued that the sudden end of the slave economy would have a profound and deadly economic impact in the South, where dependence on slave labor was the foundation of their economy. The cotton economy would collapse. The tobacco crop dried up in the fields. Rice would cease to be profitable." Slave owners looked for a way to maximize the use of slaves, so Eli Whitney created the cotton gin1. As this revolutionary machine was increasing cotton production, it was necessary for more slaves to be put to work in the fields. At the same time the Union states were more industrialized and did not require as much slavery as the Confederate states, this led to unacceptable slavery, thus making it illegal. In this period the period of Enlightenment2......middle of paper......begins and embarks on its journeys. Whether or not you agree with the Confederacy or whether you agree with the ideas of multiple unions, it's all based on history, without historical research or any reporting on this war, I think we could all agree on the fact that in the end the winner is the one who fights for the little man's cause. The little man is the person who can't stand alone, whose hope is all placed in your arms. In the Civil War the little man would be seen as a slave, and his savior was the Union troops who willingly gave up their lives so as to be freed from the grasp of slave holders. In conclusion, the North had considered slavery morally wrong. , but the South needed it for its businesses, both agricultural and industrial, to not only survive but thrive. The civil war was not only fought over morality, but also over the economy of a group of people.
