To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper LeePrompt: Explain how the fictional Maycomb County in Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird represents many of the social problems we have today and explains how the Atticus Finch's empathy as all people serve as models that we should all follow.__________________________________________________________________Mental dexterity in To Kill a Mockingbird“I have but a lamp by which my children are guided feet, and is the lamp of experience. I know no other way to judge the future than by the past." - Edward Gibbon. There were many social problems in To Kill a Mockingbird which were shown such as racism, child abuse, poverty and child abuse. alcohol and drugs. The main social problem in To Kill a Mockingbird is narrow mindedness. Despite Atticus's great efforts, the problem continued in the book. This is also true in today's society, our society has taken steps to solve it. but the narrow mindedness is still in circulation First, racism and prejudice are examples of narrow-mindedness. There are many instances of racism in To Kill a Mockingbird, or as Atticus calls it “the usual Maycomb disease”. they conformed to racism and as Atticus said, “Only children cry” when there are issues of racism Aunt Alexandra shows her racial discrimination when she gets angry because Calpurnia let Scout and Jem go to her church. Even their cousin Francis calls Atticus a “nigger lover.” Mrs. Dubose says, "Your [Atticus's] father is no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" (135). We have made some important steps with respect to racism, such as Obama becoming president, but it still exists. If you're a poor black man on trial for a crime you can't afford a good lawyer, so it's even more likely that... middle of paper... speech, Atticus says “ There is an institution that makes a poor man equal like a Rockefeller, a fool like an Einstein, and an ignorant like any college president. That institution is a court…. In the name of God, do your duty.”(274). Furthermore, he later says, “The only place a man should get a fair deal is in a courtroom, any color of the rainbow…” (295). “History does nothing, it does not possess immense riches, it does not fight battles. It is men, real, living, who do all this” - Karl Marx. To solve the social problem of narrow-mindedness, we must learn from what he said and made the character Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird. We must look at the world from the other person's point of view and treat them as you would like to be treated. As a society, we must defend people who are treated unfairly.
