Imprisonment serves to prevent nonviolent offenders from becoming violent. In contrast, nonviolent offenders often become violent once incarcerated, due to the sense of hierarchy and masculinity present in the prison system. There are many aspects of prison life that could cause nonviolent offenders to become violent. The fear and stigma surrounding being a man in prison can also cause violence. In Manhood & Violence: Fatal Peril, inmates of a federal prison were invited to immerse themselves in a program called "manalive." The program required men to examine their personal beliefs about what it meant to be a man and how this led to their violence. Although all of the men involved in the program were violent offenders, the program was designed to help them understand why their masculinity became a determining factor in their violent acts.
