The book Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is about Janie Crawford and her search for independence and true love. She finds herself involved in three marriages, one she runs away from and the other two end tragically. And on her journey, she learns a lot about love and herself. Janie's three marriages were all different, each brought her here for a different reason, and each had something different to teach her. She was forced to marry Logan Killicks and she hated him. So, she left him for Joe Starks who promised to treat her like a woman should be treated, but also treated her like he thought a woman should be. After Joe's death she found Tea Cake, a romantic man who loved Janie just as she was and worked hard to provide for her. Although Janie had three marriages in total, each one appealed to her for a different reason. She was married to Logan Killicks by her grandmother who wanted her to have protection and security. "Tain't Logan Killicks Ah wants you to have a baby, it's his protection." (Hurston 15) Janie's grandmother says when Janie said she didn't want to marry Logan. Although Janie didn't agree with her grandmother, she knew she only wanted the best for her. Later, she married Joe Starks, Janie was dissatisfied with her marriage to Logan, so Joe came in and swept her away. Janie didn't like the fact that Logan was trying to make it work, hence Joe's proposition, "You never knew what it was like to be treated like a lady and ah I want to be the one to show you." (Hurston 29) was too good to pass up, so she left Logan and married Joe. Janie's last marriage was to Tea Cake. Fed up with being treated badly by Joe, Janie finally found someone who liked her for who she was. "No,... mid-paper... she still gained something of value from each of them. Janie's three marriages were all different, each brought her here for a different reason, and each had something different to teach her In summary, he married Logan because of his grandmother, Jody because she wanted to escape from Logan and Tea Cake because they had true love The marriages were different in that Logan treated Janie like a slave, Joe was molding her into what he wanted was and Tea Cake just wanted to be with her. As a result, Janie learned many things from each marriage Tea Cake taught her to be herself and do what she wanted, her marriage to Logan taught her to make changes in her. life and her marriage to Joe taught her to stand up for herself. Ultimately, her marriage experiences have shaped her into the person she has become and have been an important part of her life.
