The California Center for Public Health Advocacy (CCPHA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1999 by the Southern California Public Health Association (SCPHA) and the California Public Health Association-North (CPHA-N) . CCPHA “raises awareness of critical public health issues and mobilizes communities to promote the establishment of effective state and local health policies (www.ccpha.org).” The CCPHA focuses its advocacy mission on current public health issues facing the state of California. The organization also reviews and disseminates critical public health information affecting local communities. CCPHA conducts studies, develops policy reports, and updates other advocates on current state and local policy reforms. Community mobilization, research, state and local data, scientific advisory committees, media advocacy, training policymakers, and building partnerships are all strategies used by CCPHA to strengthen state and local policy reforms. CCPHA has applied these strategies to public health issues affecting California, such as childhood nutrition, childhood obesity, and increased overall physical activity in children and adults. CCPHA has accepted donations from The California Endowment, The California Vitamin Cases Consumer Settlement Fund, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The California Nutrition Network, The California Wellness Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, and The William Randolph Hearst Foundation, as well as various other groups and associations who support its mission. In this policy advocacy brief, CCPHA supports the implementation of the California Soda Tax (AB 669) policies. AB 669 would impose a tax of one cent per ounce on soda and other sugar-laced drinks. This state level tax… middle of the paper… the harmful effects sugary drinks have caused on society. The CCPHA also maintains policies and procedures used to limit the sale and marketing of sugar-sweetened beverages, while providing healthy alternatives to the public.
