In 1804 Napoleon I established the Napoleonic Code. The code outlawed birth-centered rights, supported freedom of religion, and indicated that administrative jobs should be filled to maximum capacity. In 1880, after the Napoleonic Code came into force, same-sex sexual relations were legalized in Japan. In the feudal era, Japan had a very strong relationship with homosexual behavior between men. There were strong indications that sexual activity was a rite of passage for some men as well as a pleasure and privilege for others.
