Topic > My Experience in Social Work - 943

My second year internship, Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC), gave me the ability to work with a diverse group of participants. Furthermore, I was also given the opportunity to demonstrate my Korean language skills during the internship. Although I had been placed in a somewhat similar position, Orange County Asian and Pacific Community Alliance (OCAPICA), the year before, I was unable to fully utilize my language skills with many participants. Currently, I have been able to work with the monolingual Korean elderly population, which has helped me grow as a social worker, because I have not worked with this particular population on a professional level. The elderly population helped me understand many issues that marginalize the elderly. CSUDH's MSW Self Study (2009) describes cognition-based theories as approaches that use contextual awareness, learning, and behavioral theories. Therefore, working with the elderly population has given me the ability to understand cognition-based theories that harm the elderly population due to age. As a result, many older adults are at greater risk of cognitive decline and deterioration due to increased risk factors for age and conditions that may be related to dementia. Working with children has allowed me to understand cognitive abilities and perceptions at an early age. It is important to be aware of and help children develop important skills for socializing with their peers, family members and their community. Another population I have the honor of working with is adults with disabilities. One participant in particular who was assigned to me is quadriplegic and I am assisting him by working with him emotionally and helping him to request necessarily community resources. Since his accident is recent, he has gone through... middle of paper... a set of beliefs and stereotypes that influence larger ideas in society. Thus, the heterogeneity of disadvantages experienced by Asian Americans is decategorized within the framework of social constructionism. In practice, I can identify numerous disadvantages in social services due to culturally incompetent practices that disadvantage monolingual Asian Americans. In this case, being able to identify the marginalization of being monolingual helps to provide insight into the disadvantages in terms of social capital for many monolingual participants. CSUDH's MSW Self Study (2009) describes Assets and Social Development (ASD) as focusing on participants' ability based on social capital and resources. As a social worker, it is important to support methods to increase participants' capacity for civic participation and collaboration to promote economic growth.
