Proper student engagement through appropriate learning environments and support for students to succeed in obtaining a higher education is the fundamental requirement of every educational institution, but the quality of American higher education as the growth of student campuses is questionable. Throughout the 20th century, national reports raised the issue of providing non-individualized, passive environments on campuses that could not assist students in learning ( Kezar & Kinzie, 2006 ). Furthermore, educational institutions have failed to foster the social or academic integration of transfer or international students, or to promote diversity among international students and American students. Without an adequate environment that encourages learning and development, the future of both students as individuals and the academic community is uncertain, so a system of collaboration between professors and students combined with the promotion of collaboration between students from different backgrounds is essential to create a solid foundation in which students can obtain higher education and engage in personal development. Higher institutions should promote both intellectual and personal improvement among students because unilateral development does not guarantee a bright future for the academic community. However, several findings confirm that the system has failed to show interest in promoting and enhancing student integration and development (Zhao, Kuh, & Carini, 2005; Townsend & Wilson, 2006). Other researchers have aimed to establish correlations between students from different areas of study to examine individual differences that influence student engagement (Ball & Perry, 2011). Research by Ball and Perry (2011) indicates that cognitive difference...... half of paper ......006), thus inadequate support for academic and social integration appears to be the key issue that may implicate international student involvement and development. Furthermore, current research has demonstrated that both student-related (Ball & Perry, 2011) and college-related variables (Kezar & Kinzie, 2006) influence the quality of higher-level education. Student involvement is clearly not a unilateral responsibility because the interest of both students and educational institutions is needed for effective collaboration in creating an active, supportive and engaging environment. Future research could focus on cross-cultural studies to determine the behavioral and cognitive characteristics of students from different cultural backgrounds to understand which educational approaches would prove most effective in encouraging their socialization, learning and development..
