Is it feminist to be a powerful feminist? Just as we ask many questions about what it means to be a feminist, an empowered feminist, or any other group rooted in feminism, it is evident that these groups themselves are asking the same questions. In our textbook alone there are almost a dozen types of feminist groups that have different positions on almost every single issue of feminism. Outside of the textbook there are also dozens of other small feminist groups that definitely don't keep tabs on every issue. Some “powerful feminists” speaking out are listed in our “Gendered Lives: Communication, Gender, and Culture” by Julia Wood include Naomi Wolf and Katie Roiphe. Both of these women argue that the only thing holding women back is the artificial sense of inferiority and false sense of victimhood that many of them have regarding how society views them. Naomi Wolf argues that women should “stop thinking of themselves as victims” (84). Roiphe argues that holding nonviolent protests against rape and sexual harassment alongside Take Back the Night marches proclaims that women see themselves as victims. It ignores the fact that many women may see these events as uplifting and empowering for women. I don't think it's very fair for these two women to say that they represent all women because they are both white and middle class, as mentioned in the book, however I believe they have the right to call themselves whatever they want. If they really think that women should stop seeing themselves as victims and practice what they preach, then I think it's fair for them to say that they are empowered feminists despite not fitting the demographics of many women who have experienced discrimination. However I am not a woman…middle of the road…on how to make them. Power feminists really encourage women to step up and take responsibility for their lives and stop feeling like victims while other groups really feel like victims and choose to fight for their rights in different ways. It's safe to say that perhaps these various groups will never completely agree on everything, but perhaps by cooperating just a little they can achieve the goals they both share.
