Both are essential elements that complement each other as they cooperate within the scope of nursing practice and the definition of nursing. Furthermore, Meehan (2009) states her definition of nursing, “modern nursing is a dynamic career, offering an incredible range of opportunities and a real chance to have an interesting, successful career that makes a real difference in other people's lives" (p. .1). Meehan's definition of nursing talks about having the ability to make a real difference in someone's life, and this is exactly where the art and science aspect of nursing comes into play. In reference to Jasmine (2009), who is able to provide support as to why nursing can be seen as an art, a science and the combination of the two. Nursing is described as a “complex union of art and science” (Jasmine, 2009, p. 415). Throughout the chapters of her book Nightingale integrated the arts and science of nursing; for example in chapter two there were five aspects related to maintaining a clean house. The aspects would be the scientific part. When something requires attention to be cleaned is when the artistic aspect comes into play. The nurse caring for patients wants her patient to improve. Take precautions and keep rooms clean to Nightingale standards. There is no precise and univocal definition of what the integration between art and nursing is in every situation, however it is present and present in all situations.
