1. Why has Thomas Jefferson's drafting of the Declaration of Independence become controversial over the years? The reason Jefferson's drafting of the Declaration of Independence has become so controversial is because of his actions. At the time he wrote the Declaration he owned approximately 200 slaves. So when he added the words “All men are created equal,” he was referring only to white men. Another problem is that he expressed mixed feelings about blacks and slavery, but his actions and words once again demonstrated that he supported the belief of white superiority. He also had an intimate relationship with one of his slaves which led to him fathering at least one, if not more, of her children. The aspects I listed above are some of the reasons why Jefferson wrote the Declaration. How might the mass media be linked to prejudice in the United States? The mass media is linked to prejudice in the United States because it has an undeniable influence on how individuals think, what they believe, and how they function in society. The media influences how individuals perceive certain races. The media is usually skewed towards white people, and unless they change course towards a non-white market, most of the images will be white. There are individuals of other races portrayed but they are portrayed as geeks or drug addicts, criminals etc. This explains why the mass media plays a role in the prejudices that occur in the United States (Scott, p. 136, 144). 4. Over the years, the United States has enacted a series of laws aimed at reducing state-sanctioned segregation. However, some communities remain separate. How does this interpersonal racism occur when racial harassment and discrimination are routine and have become expected in the daily lives of some human beings. This event leads to influencing the individual's personal relationships, ambitions and self-esteem over time. Experiencing these effects over time leads the individual to have constant fear and stress which can lead to wear and tear on the individual's physical and mental well-being. This has led to even greater health disparities such as psychological distress, hypertension, and many other health problems such as feelings of unhealthy (Scott,
