Topic > Analysis of Colm Tóibin's short story, A Journey

Life is a journey, a cycle. We start somewhere and end somewhere, we are on a round trip. We experience different seasons and grow both physically and mentally. But at some point in life we all realize that we want to last, to live forever. From an early age we are told that one day we will all die and be buried in the earth. The story: "A Journey", written by Colm Tóibin, takes us on a journey together with a little boy named David and his mother Mary. The story, A Journey, begins with a dialogue, in medias res, between the son and his mother, where we are also introduced to a third-person narrator. The story contains flashbacks, told from the mother's point of view. "...but random images of places from the past kept coming back to her, and there was nothing she could do to stop them... She saw her mother's portrait hanging after her death in the musty, unused living room above the shop of his father in Ferns.” In the introduction the reader is told that David was born after twenty years of marriage and as he was the only child, Mary and Seamus actually gave up hope of having a child, but suddenly Mary became pregnant and David La was born story deals with both birth and death, two main elements in the “cycle of life” theory. We also find elements in the story that refer to religion and Christianity. “well, God speaks to your soul because he loves you.” story takes place in the countryside with a small church and a small country national school, where Seamus, David's father, had been headmaster. As a boy David was very curious and asked his mother many questions, as all four do the five-year-olds. He often babysat Mrs. Redmond and began to have a close bond with her...... middle of paper......is washing clothes in the next room The image could therefore be an example of how depression manifests itself because it seems that the boy does not receive the attention he needs, especially from his mother. The way we are raised and the relationships we establish with our parents and other individuals have a huge impact on our entire life. Small situations that occur during our childhood can have vital effects and consequences for the rest of our lives. Neglect and age difference can be one of the many causes of unstable development. David was confronted with some of these things along with topics like death, at an early age. This caused deep depression and a superficial relationship with his parents and others. Life is something extremely precious and how we impact and influence others is extremely important. We are all on the “same” journey.
