How do you classify whether someone is human or not? A complicated question has many different possible answers, but only a few could be justified as humane. Kazuo Ishiguro addressed this topic in his book Never Let Me Go. A recurring question throughout the novel is whether or not these clones are considered a human or just another scientific project. Suspicious individuals from the surrounding communities in the novel believed that the students were not human, because they could not reproduce, had no parents, and for the simple fact that what the students were going through was morally unacceptable. In my opinion, Ishiguro proves that clones are indeed human, thanks to their artwork, which shows that they have creativity, show emotions, and that clones can do human-like things. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is a novel told from the perspective of a student, Kathy H, who attends this boarding school, Hailsham, in England in the 1990s. She tells her story of what it was like growing up and how she got to where she is today. The students grew up in Halisham until they were old enough to donate their vital organs. This raised speculation in the community as to whether or not they were human as they were actually the replication of someone else's DNA. The main goal of Madame and the other guardians of Halisham was to prove that they were indeed human and to protect the students. However, the community did not accept the fact that they could be human, which ultimately led to the school's closure years later. Humans are a unique set of species with many distinctive characteristics. Most people, when asked what makes you human, would answer being able to breathe, talk, bleed, and reproduce....... middle of paper... have sex, but as they grow up the idea of sex becomes more mature. Their ability to crave sex, grow, and become more mature proves that clones are just like humans. As Ruth said, sometimes it feels like “doing it.” Humans experience this feeling and desire to have sex, which demonstrates one's humanity. Some who object to the idea that clones are human because they have a desire to have sex would argue that they are not human because they cannot reproduce. Yes, in this case clones can't reproduce, but there are also humans in the real world who can't reproduce, so they depend on other methods like adoption. Humans who cannot reproduce still desire sex, like the clones in the novel who desire sex but cannot reproduce. This idea and the fact that there are real human beings who can relate helps demonstrate their humanity and not deny it as some might think.
