Vertical farms? You might ask what is it? Are those the tomatoes hanging from people's porches? Well, not exactly vertical farming is stacking multiple greenhouses on top of each other to create a more efficient and organized farming area. What if we need that space for a large corporation or community park, as some might argue? Well, what is better for the community as a whole than having a farm that can provide the community with tons of fresh crops or something that could be destroyed over time. This concept comes from a professor at Columbia University named Dr. Dickson Despommier. People see this as something that could cost a lot of money and will not provide any results in the short term. Is vertical farming good or bad? I believe vertical farms would be very beneficial to any community. Dickson Despommier is the biggest advocate of vertical farming and is also a professor of ecology at Colombia University. Dr. Dickson Despommier describes his idea "A vertical farm, many stories high, will be located in the heart of the world's urban centers." (Ted Talk). According to his ted talk and his book The Vertical Farm: Feeding Ourselves and the World in the 21st Century, this relatively new concept of vertical farming has the potential to rebuild the world in many ways and make the world better for everyone. For example, a vertical farm can provide fresher produce to its community because it is grown locally and not shipped in from outside sources. Additionally, vertical farming is designed to use much less land and water than traditional farms, as the water used will be reclaimed water, reducing the impact on the environment.
