In the early years we only thought about sadness and not an actual medical problem. Over the years, researchers have picked up on a more important aspect of the medical condition, depression. This should be proof enough that depression is serious and that there is still so much unknown to discover. Doing more research on depression can benefit the field of psychology in multiple ways. One, depression is heavily weighted with brain-related research. Almost all research on depression will involve the brain or parts of it. Psychology is the study of the brain and what it does, when it does it, in great detail. By learning more about the brain for depression, it will also advance brain research which in turn will make the field of psychology broader. Two, depression itself is a medical problem, to find out what to do if a person has it, they need to go to a psychologist. Therefore, finding out more about what people do when they are depressed can make it easier to diagnose patients because the psychologist knows what to look for. If research continues, this could lead to patients appearing to be fine but actually exhibiting signs of depression and these signs are the new signs that have been discovered just recently with insights
