Nicole BeazorEconomy CPLouie March 119, 2014Costs and Benefits of Veteran Support Soldiers, both men and women, risk their lives fighting for our country, and when they return home they receive far fewer benefits than as one would expect. Throughout history, support for veterans has declined. The amount of money provided to veterans for health care and housing after returning to the United States has significantly decreased since World War I. It was once assumed that the government would provide services to veterans, but nonprofit organizations and communities have filled the gap to help veterans get back on their feet after returning home. The government depends on nonprofit organizations to provide veterans and their families with needed goods and services. The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is an organization that provides services to veterans and their families. WWP focuses on mind, body, economic empowerment, and engagement, all of which help veterans overcome post-war symptoms (The Wounded Warrior Project). The government recommends granting fewer housing allowances, limiting salary increases and increasing rates for healthcare services; other cuts would include stores not being able to provide discounts to military families (Nissenbaum and Barnes). The amount of money veterans receive for housing, healthcare and pensions is being cut left and right by the government and the money is being used and allocated to other departments. In California, the County Veterans Service Officers Inc. plays a very important role in the lives of veterans (California Association of County Veterans Service Officers, Inc.). Many organizations help veterans who need services because our government is not always able to provide ...... middle of paper ...... documentation needed to receive the services they need ("Point: i veterans struggle to receive benefits"). Soldiers are required to fill out an excessive amount of paperwork just to receive treatment. “Veterans and soldiers had to submit twenty-two documents to eight different departments to receive treatment” (“Point: Veterans Struggle to Receive Benefits”). It has become a very long and difficult process for our veterans to receive medical care after returning home. What are the cost benefits of veteran support? Veterans do not receive the support and care they need or expect after returning home from war. The budget for veterans is small and continually shrinking. The government needs money for many things, but the men and women who fight for our country expect the government to provide health benefits, retirement plans, and housing support..
