Students have been dealing with bullying for decades. This behavior, also commonly known as traditional bullying, refers to the physical, verbal, or social abuse of an individual. As technology has evolved, the actions of this behavior have also evolved into a larger problem. The world of social networks has created new ways to communicate with family and friends. In contrast, some individuals did not necessarily use social networks for productive reasons. Some individuals have recently used technology to threaten other individuals. With easy access to the Internet, cyberbullying has become a larger problem among young people. At the age of eleven I entered the world of social networks by creating my personal account on Myspace. Three years later, in 2009, I created a Facebook account. I used social networking sites to update my status, write a post, comment and post photos. The dangers of social networking sites never crossed my mind, until I witnessed and experienced them. While browsing my Myspace account, a window appeared indicating that I had a new message. The message was from a girl I had mutual friends with. Within minutes of starting the conversation, this person online threatened me. Furthermore, he called me horrible names. I wasn't sure how to respond, I spent a few minutes thinking. In the end I decided it was best to just block it. This bully managed to scare me with just one click. Cyberbullying refers to intentional and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices (Hinduja 2010). Traditional bullying and cyberbullying are similar in form and technique, but they also have numerous differences. Different… half of paper… When phones are turned off, messages sent by the attacker will stay there forever and then be discovered by the victim later. Bullying has been an ongoing problem in society. This problem has worsened with access to social media. The freedom of the Internet has changed the lives of many, but it has also changed the way students bully each other. Cyberbullying has become a misuse of technology that students can use to attack each other. It is important to know the similarities and differences between traditional bullying and cyberbullying. Cyberspace is ruining the lives of many children and young adults and somehow the word needs to be spread to them. Many who are victims of cyberbullying take drastic action, so if a child makes this drastic decision something must be done to prevent it.
