Topic > The negative impact of generational issues in…

Technology is an important factor that influences the strengths and weaknesses of each generation. Millennials' familiarity and strength in using new technologies is both helpful and harmful in the workplace. Through the use of technology, this generation is using their internet and social media skills to engage more politically. (Doerr, 2014) Social media offers young people instant access to news and controversial issues around the world, raising their awareness and generating concern about community and global challenges such as war and poverty. (Crappell, 2012) In contrast, there has been a measured increase in narcissistic behavior directly related to technology compared to older generations. Having high levels of narcissism means that individuals may lack the critical empathy needed when entering a service industry job. (Doerr, 2014) Other weaknesses of the Millennial generation include difficulty having respectful communication tendencies. This can lead to personal conflicts between colleagues and even supervisors. Millennials also have a slight problem working individually on their own, without any structure or supervision, to complete a task or project. This is caused by their team-oriented organizational behavior, which is unique compared to other generations. Again, both a strength and weakness, Millennials' ability to work well in a team setting can have a major impact on the work completed by a team.
