Most citizens in the United States of America deny that human trafficking has occurred in the community in which they live (Weaver, 2014). In reality, the United States contributes enormously to the problem. America is considered a world power in business, and the human trafficking business is no different (Tully, 2008). Trafficking victims often use alcohol or drugs to deal with psychological problems resulting from their time in captivity. This leads to a more widespread drug culture in communities where trafficking is more common (Soroptomist.org, 2012). Human trafficking leads to tremendous feelings of loss and anger among victims' families. Additionally, crime hinders the U.S. economy and harms legal businesses (Weaver, 2014).
