Plans for our project: The shop can be one of the most productive places for a person with the tools, equipment, and skills to build and repair things. But if you can't get your hands on the right wrench, your screwdrivers are piled in a corner, and your air compressor is buried under a mountain of lumber scraps, nothing productive will happen. Getting things in order can seem intimidating because some equipment is so large and bulky; the truth is, though, once you get the big stuff taken care of, everything else comes together and you'll soon be done with organizing and getting things done.1. Clean up the shop, to make it a shop (thing) The whole workshop space is in disarray, a total mess. Everything needs to be removed to start with a clean slate. Once everything is out, be sure to sweep and wash the floors and walls. This could be a great opportunity to repair the building, paint the walls and stain the concrete floor. It will give the space a fresh, clean and new look. Start purging. To purge, start by creating four piles: keep, donate, dispose, and recycle. Return items that do not belong to the company or laboratory. Get rid of duplicates. How many hammers, screws, brooms etc. they are needed for the workshop.2. Items brought into the store (how to) Take inventory of what the business has, then map out your space and create zones. Now that we've cleared out all the stuff, let's take inventory of what we have; this way we will have a better idea of what organizational elements the company can work with or what would need to be purchased. NEVER purchase organizational products before disposing of them... it will save time, money and frustration. Now, map the space into different spaces/work zones.
