To begin with, Ray Fowler studied the average time that people, especially younger people, spend in their day. According to the pie chart, the average American tends to watch television for an average of two and a half hours (Fowler). From Ray Fowler's pie chart, the average reading is twenty-two minutes which doesn't weigh heavily on television viewing (Fowler). Show others who have less than an hour how to play video games, relax, play sports, and socialize that average people do throughout each day (Fowler). On an average American day, people have more time watching television than improving their reading skills. Then there is Amy Williams' World Standard Reading chart of the reading performance of fifteen-year-old students. According to his graph, the US score is below 500 in the world along with science and mathematics (Williams). The first country in reading and science is Japan with a score close to 540 on the world scale (Williams). China performed well in reading, science, and mathematics (Williams).
