As students from underrepresented groups strive to access higher education, the diverse perspectives they stimulate innovate and challenge social norms for the benefit of society. In higher education consultancy work, if underrepresented groups are not assisted in a variety of ways, this is contrary to the purpose of higher education to promote innovation and challenge social norms. NACADA's statement of core values states that "counselors are sensitive to the values and customs of the surrounding community aimed at making higher education more accessible through educational opportunities and resources." Bright students who do not receive academic or financial assistance will focus on factors irrelevant to their overall personal growth during their time in higher education.
