Love is the fundamental being in our humanity, and desires and affection shape us. Love is rarely seen, it is frowned upon by the Party, and any sign of affection is a thought crime. By putting an end to all emotions and expressions, love must also be eliminated, but love and the need for affection remain an integral part of our human nature that is almost impossible to extinguish completely. Being simply another emotion, love would be easier for the Party to successfully eliminate, but it runs in our blood. “Animal instinct,” which resides beneath the surface of us, “was [is] the force that [would] tear the Party to pieces” (128). “Animal instinct” refers directly to our human desire for affection, and the manipulation of loving emotions hurts and evokes our natural instincts. The Party's greatest weakness is what happens under our skin, in our minds and in our hearts, because ultimately animal instinct can never be persuaded or tortured.
