As a disease there were certain symptoms that would be used to determine whether the woman was actually in menopause. Of course during the 1950s and 1960s there were doctoral education videos that could aid in the treatment of menopause, everywhere from hormone therapy, radiation and estrogen pills; anything that claimed to help restore the woman to her previous state. This was a way of thinking that helped keep alive the fear of aging and “menopause,” as it was called in the short 1953 educational film shown at the conference. This fear of growing old and becoming useless and repulsive is still present today. Women from a young age are constantly reminded that it is up to them to follow the right program of healthy eating and exercise, but also to purchase the right products to help them maintain their youth. Such shame around aging in our Western culture has created the rise and acceptance of cosmetic surgery.
