The South was doomed by the first shot fired at Fort Sumter. The South was absolutely no match for the North. The National Banking Act of February 1863 helped the Northern economy prosper. In the north the union had almost all the factories that made their armaments. Also, when the south left and created the confederacy, they only had eleven states and most of their population was black and they were in favor of abolishing slavery. Compared to the Southern states, the union had twenty-three states with the full support of their people for the abolition of slavery. In short, in all areas of the Civil War, the union had more financial support, was equipped with more technical modern warfare, and had more soldiers supporting their cause to eliminate slavery which made the union victorious. A narrow overview of the resources the union had over the Confederates was unparalleled. Of the country's total population, 71% belonged to the union and 29% to the confederation. Wealth on the Union side was 75% reduced to 25% on the Confederate side. Industrial workers were 92%, 11.5 to 1. Firearms were an even bigger union advantage, at 97%, 32.3 to 1. To bolster that number iron production was at 94%. , 15.7 to one. Which, in my opinion, was a great advantage the union had over the confederation. Coal production was 97% by the union. Wheat and corn also recorded higher production in the Union. One of the few manufacturing materials with which the Confederacy overwhelmed the Union was cotton. The union had only 4% of the production while the confederation had 96%. The Confederacy may have had the most cotton production during the Civil War, but that couldn't compete with the overwhelming production of everyone else...paper halves...scrap munitions." During the war Colonel Hiram Berdan formed a regiment of sharpshooters for the Union Army called Berdan's Sharpshooters. These new soldiers would be better marksmen against the enemy and would save large amounts of ammunition and money. Competitions were held across the country to find these elite sharpshooters To make the cut you had to make 10 consecutive shots at a target at two hundred meters. Each shot could not be more than a few centimeters from the center of the target. At the end of these competitions 1,000 winners were enrolled in the first most skilled shooters in the States United The next generation of breech-loading rifles called magazine rifles would prove even more deadly to Confederate adversaries. "Weapons such as the Spencer and Henry repeating rifles were designed to carry pre-loaded magazines of seven to fifteen rounds that could be inserted into the rear of the weapon.”3
