Topic > Family Nurse Practitioner – My Career Choice

The medical field has been an integral part of my entire life. As a child, I witnessed and accompanied my mother as she was rushed to hospital on numerous occasions due to a chronic asthma condition. With every breath she took, the feeling of caressing her and being at her side arose within me. With each hospital visit and the chaos of doctors and nurses in and out of my mother's hospital room, I was inspired by the true collaborative commitment of these medical professionals to my mother. As the nurses cared for my mother, my brain was occupied with questions like "why is my mother experiencing this, what is causing it, and what can she do to fix (prevent) this?" Now at the age of 33 and with 13 years of experience working directly with nurses/professionals, doctors and patients, I have the same questions I asked myself growing up and a deep desire to dedicate my life to helping and caring for others . My lifelong dream is to become a nurse practitioner who is not only compassionate but also properly trained to identify early signs and symptoms of distress and implement a treatment plan. My biggest motivation is to encourage people to live healthier, longer lives. Throughout my academic and professional years, I have taken the right steps in the direction of one day becoming a nurse; however, due to the balance between family and work, I had to postpone my goals. My decision to finally take the next step towards my passion of becoming a nurse practitioner only happened recently when I came across the dreaded words “end-stage renal disease” in my father-in-law's health history. The fact that he had little to no knowledge of the severity of his disease, the steps he could take to prevent it, and the treatment options for the future solidified my decision. I understood that his lack of knowledge was not due to receiving inadequate medical care, but the mere result of avoiding medical care altogether. I eventually realized that seeking medical care as a primary source is not a norm in many communities around the world. Alternative medicine, home remedies and a lack of understanding of disease prevention are at the forefront of health problems in such communities. My choice to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) will allow me to promote health and well-being to people of all ages. I want to extend care to families, including children, parents and grandparents, in the hope of contributing to early diagnosis, prevention and treatment. My goal is to collaborate with the community, explain the science behind the medicine, not judge those who use alternative medicine, and offer resources. Please note: this is just an example.
