The career I have chosen combines both of my passions, law enforcement and my love for animals. This is the K9 Unit's research. The K9 Unit is a unit that is part of the police force or even the army. The K9 Unit is made up of both human and canine officers. In this unit officers and their canine companions are trained to work together to perform a multitude of different tasks such as search and rescue, aiding in the search for forensic evidence, bomb tracking and drug discovery. Almost everywhere you go you can spot these partners, you can see them in K9 marked police cars, or even at an airport going through your luggage. This unit does a multitude of things for the police department or military unit to which it belongs. In the police force they are used for search and rescue; they are used as cadaver dogs, trailing dogs and water search dogs. Cadaver dogs are used to find human remains, they can find the smallest piece of evidence such as a tooth. Trail dogs are used to find scent marks left by a person. They are taken to the location where the person was last seen and use an item of clothing that belongs to that person. This is how I am training my dog, he is a trailing dog. Now there are water search dogs, these dogs are used to find bodies that have been submerged in a body of water. These dog and handler pairs are on a boat where the dog can smell gases released from a body. They are also used to locate drugs and sniff out hidden bombs. These dogs and handlers must go through special training, so that the dogs can identify specific odors and the handlers are able to understand signals and work together as a team. There are certain dog breeds that people always imagine when they think of the K9 Unit. We usually think of the German Shepherd and the Belgian Malinois, because these are the most common breeds used. But there are other breeds used such as Rottweilers, Doberman Pinchers, Bloodhounds and Beagles.
