Topic > Sherlock Holmes: Which TV Show Really Represents...

Sherlock Holmes Over the years since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the character Sherlock Holmes and wrote a collection of the detective's stories, there have been many TV adaptations of his Sherlock Holmes stories. Currently in the 21st century there are two most commonly watched, Sherlock, the BBC version of Sherlock Holmes, and Elementary, the American version of Sherlock Holmes. Most people who have read the stories read them when they were college students, but after reading the book they wonder which version is best to watch in hopes that it is true to what they read. After watching BBC Sherlock and Elementary I noticed that they are different in many ways based on adaptation, characters, Sherlock and Watson and fidelity but only one is true and it is the best to watch for readers of the original. One difference between the two programs is Sherlock's deduction skills, Sherlock shows Sherlock's deduction skills to the fullest extent, while Elementary does not. In Sherlock, the BBC adaptation, each episode closely resembles one of the original stories with a better explanation behind each one. Throughout the show, as Sherlock thinks or observes, words will appear on the screen, to show what is going through his mind as he deduces his observation. This is good for viewers because they are able to follow what is happening, making it impossible to get lost. For example In A Study in Pink, while Sherlock is investigating the death of a woman in pink he observes every possible clue left behind and while this is happening the viewers read and see on screen every clue that Sherlock sees that we can't like the ring she was wearing was dirty on the outside but clean on the inside, indicating that she had removed numerous rings...... center of card...... table for the reader of the original stories. The Sherlock BBC version is the best because it provides a better understanding of what is happening by engaging the viewers by posting words on the screen that tell what is happening, what Sherlock is thinking or when he describes small details they will see what he is eliminating as possibilities. Also based on the characters, the show does not change Sherlock's image or Watson's gender and keeps it as original as Conan Doyle had imagined them. There's a reason why Conan Doyle decided to cast Watson as male because he wanted Sherlock and Watson to both be crime-solving partners and friends and not have a thing for each other like Elementary intended to do. Sherlock BBC is also the best because it has many episodes that stick to the original stories as mentioned for example A Study in Scarlet and A scandal in Bohemia as many others.
