Iconographic analysis: di Nardo, “Adoration of the Magi”The painting “Adoration of the Magi” by di Nardo depicts the three Magi approaching the baby Jesus and the Virgin Mary. However, there is much more behind this familiar scene from the Judeo-Christian tradition. When approaching this painting to analyze it iconographically, it is necessary to first look at all aspects of the form. If this aspect is ignored, we arrive at an incomplete analysis of the painting. Once you observe this, the iconography of the painting becomes much clearer, and it is easier to compare the painting to the actual biblical text from which it was taken (Gospel of St. Matthew 2:1 – 2:12). When you get closer painted, the first thing I noticed was the strange perspective. There are several vanishing points. Furthermore, all the figures appear to be placed on one plane. For this reason, the two figures representing Jesus and Mary seem to float strangely above the ground. This, I believe, draws the viewer's attention to these two figures, as they are the focus of the painting. Due to the influence of my culture, I immediately recognized the figures as Jesus and Mary. However, despite this, there are some indicators as to who the people depicted in the painting are. Looking at the painting, it is obvious that the figures of the mother and child are the main point because the gazes of all the people in the depicted center painting on the child, including that of the mother. Furthermore, the strange suspended effect directs the viewer's attention to these two figures. Both Mary and Jesus have halos, but this is not necessarily a distinguishing factor as there are four other figures in the painting who also have halos. However, the halo surrounding the baby Jesus' head has a slightly different pattern than those possessed by the other figures. This lets you know that, for whatever reason, this child stands out from all the other figures in the painting. So, even if the viewer belongs to another culture or religion and does not see the meaning of the woman in the photo dressed in blue and red, or the meaning of the "blessing" position in which the child is holding his hand, he can see that for some reason this child stands out from all the other people in the painting.
