INTRODUCTION This is a report of a session delivered in a core subject to a group of pupils with mixed abilities in Reception A. Please note that this is a group of pupils aged between 4 and 5 years old, energetic, curious and active students. I need to consider how they learn best by conducting assessments or diagnostic meetings to identify their preferred learning styles, skills, and interests. Neil Flemming developed the VARK system in 1987 to determine whether a student is a visual, auditory, reading/reading type. writing student or kinesthetic. From there, students and teachers are able to formulate new strategies based on the category they learn efficiently. Instead of doing the 16-point questionnaire, I chose to determine my students' learning styles through play. Watching children play certain games can give me a lot of insight into how they assimilate new information. Play is a very serious thing.... It is an expression of our creativity; and creativity underpins our ability to learn, to cope, and to become whatever we are. (Rogers & Sharapan, 1994, p.1) Having been placed here in the last term (4 months), I have been given the opportunity to follow and observe the students in Reception A. Every time I look at my students I wonder how I want them to learn. I decided that I wanted my students to learn through interaction. According to Vygotsky (n.d.), humans use tools that develop from a culture, such as speech and writing, to mediate their social environments. (Vygotsky's Theory of Social Development - work cited in Learning -Theories.com)DESCRIPTIONI chose to teach a lesson on English. The purpose of the session requires students to identify and perceive......the central part of the paper......promote effective learning. If I could provide them with these opportunities, it would be very rewarding. BIBLIOGRAPHY AND REFERENCES Rogers, F., & Sharapan, H. (1994). How children use play.
