For example, Scout hated Miss Dubose for telling her that her father is "no better than the niggers and trash he works for" (102). Even when Scout tried to be as sunny as possible by saying "hey Mrs. Dubose", she would get "don't say hello to me, you ugly girl! Say good afternoon, Mrs. Dubose!" (99) which caused Scout to naturally avoid her. she concluded as an evil woman who always likes to insult others for no reason. The week she died, Atticus explained to her that she was suffering from morphine and told her what a great woman she was, not beholden to anything or anyone" and was the "bravest person I have ever known" (112). Atticus teaches his sons courage by defining it as “when you know you are defeated before you start but you start anyway and you can't do it no matter what” (112). and is encouraged by her courage, Scout only judged Mrs. Dubose by seeing what was there instead of understanding the cause of her insolence. Scout has already grown up as a respectful young woman, but she realizes that she was not thinking deeply enough when she judged
