In this article I will analyze the Korean People's Army which represents the military forces of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The Korean People's Army consists of 5 branches: Korean People's Army Ground Force, Korean People's Navy, Korean People's Air Force, Strategic Missile Force, and North Korean Special Operations Force. In this article I will look at the big three: the Korean People's Army, the Korean People's Navy, and the Korean People's Air Force. I will talk about the strength of the force and some of the equipment that each person brings into combat. Korean People's Army Ground Force The Korean People's Army Ground Force constitutes the largest part of the Korean People's Army and is responsible for ground operations. In the US Department of Defense's 2013 study of the Korean People's Army, the current force is estimated to be approximately 950,000 men equipped with 4,200 tanks, 2,200 armored vehicles, 8,600 artillery guns, and over 4,800 multiple rocket launchers. The majority of the force is made up of light infantry soldiers. The vast majority of the Army is strategically deployed in forward operating areas, where their depth artillery poses an increasing threat to the ROK. Korean armor is outdated and based on technology from the 1960s and 1970s. The main battle tank of the North Korean army is the T-55. The T-55 is equipped with 120 mm or 125 mm guns, active protection systems and fire control systems with rangefinders or thermal sights. Due to the antiquated and obsolete armor equipment the North Korean military is trying to integrate is a force with a huge amount of artillery. North Korea's most dangerous artillery systems are long-range systems. The long-range systems consist of 170 mm self-propelled howitzers and... middle of paper... torpedoes, cannons and radar or infrared seekers. Even with a limited range of about 50 nautical miles, the small boats are capable of responding to combat vessels in DPRK waters. The Korean People's Navy has a large inventory of well-equipped submarines ranging from attack submarines to midget-type submarines. Attack submarines have improved sonar and are capable of carrying 14 torpedoes or 28 mines. While midget-type submarines are used for clandestine operations with special operations forces. Despite North Korea's internal challenges, the Korean People's Army poses a serious risk of challenging North Asian security and U.S. interests in the region. With little to no warning, even with its aging equipment, it still retains the ability to inflict significant damage, especially in the region from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to Seoul
