People are not one-dimensional. Each of us has multiple identities that, when combined, form who we are. How these identities intersect shape our realities, impact how we experience life, and influence how we are treated by others within society. The diagram of intersecting axes of privilege, domination, and oppression addresses multiple identities such as gender, sex, race, age, class, sexual orientation, etc. The identities examined in the diagram show that people are more likely to have privilege or face oppression depending on their classification within a specific identity. Because of intersectionality, many experience both privilege and oppression simultaneously. The four oppressive systems that have affected my life in various ways are race, gender, cultural heritage, and linguistic prejudice. In America, race is a particularly sensitive topic, especially for people of color. As a person of color, I felt like I was treated differently because of my race, and as a result, I had to change my behavior. I was followed inside the shops and I tried to appear less threatening by smiling more and keeping my hands visible. In the future, I know that a white person is more likely to get a job than me. I would have to be twice as qualified to be seriously considered against a white person. In our society, men are overwhelmingly the dominant group. Social spheres such as the workplace, home and even public spaces show the disparity in which men and women are treated. Being a woman in a society that highly values men has influenced the decisions I make. As a woman, I've noticed that I always have to explain myself when it comes to male-dominated interests. I love watching sports, especially basketball and football... center of paper... I am blatantly anti-immigration and have negative feelings towards those who speak a language other than English. To this day I am not ashamed of Kikuyu, however I am wary whenever my parents speak it in public due to the reactions people might have. Intersectionality is complex. For example, as a Black woman I experience race differently than a Black man does. And similarly, a white woman experiences sexism differently than I do. Despite the four systems of oppression discussed, there are also many ways in which I am privileged. As someone who conforms to gender norms, is heterosexual, able-bodied, credentialed, young, middle class, and fertile, my position in society is much higher than that of most. The unique thing about intersectionality is that both oppression and privilege made me who I am today and ultimately changed me for the better.
