Time is running outTime is running out and it is one of the most vital and overlooked qualities of life. Albert Camus highlights the theme of time in his 1947 novel, The Plague. Through the use of allegory and point of view, Camus demonstrates that when people are unaware of time and its progress, they are wasting the precious and limited time in their lives. He consistently establishes that the amount of consciousness a person gains is the difference between spending time wisely and foolishly. To fully utilize it, people must be aware of time and its passage. Camus uses point of view to demonstrate his view of time through Tarrou's eyes. “…Tarrou adds: 'Question: how not to waste time? Answer: being fully aware of it all the time. Ways this can be done: By spending your days in an uncomfortable chair in a dentist's waiting room; staying on the balcony all Sunday afternoon; listening to lectures in a language you don't know; traveling on the longest and least convenient train routes, and of course staying upright all the way; queuing at the theater box office and then not buying a seat; and so on” (Camus 26). The activities described by Tarrou are not very different from those of the people he censors. However, the difference lies in the amount of consciousness gained by the person. Tarrou argues that by being aware, anyone can give purpose to any action. These activities seem like a waste of time, but looking at the things around them, they are not. For example, listening to a lecture you know, you need to think a little deeper. People are used to being told things directly; however, this case would force them to draw... in the center of the paper... the moment in this book is Miss Havisham. Dickens continues: "On this day of the year, long before you were born, this pile of decay," hitting the pile of cobwebs on the table with his crutch but not touching it, "was brought here. He and I have worn ourselves out together. The mice gnawed it, and teeth sharper than those of mice gnawed me." (97). He may have stopped all the clocks in the Satis House, but he cannot stop time. She is stuck and destroyed by time No matter how hard anyone tries, time is the one thing that is impossible to recover. Time is wasted if people are not aware of its passing, instead of spending the day mindlessly, they need to reach maximum awareness and examine the things around them. People only have control over time when they realize that the second that has just passed will never return.
