President Bush and Prime Minister Blair gave speeches shortly after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia, which occurred on September 11, 2001. Former President George W Bush used pathos, anaphora and personification in his speech to convey an optimistic tone. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, addressing the same topic, used a mild invective and parallel structure to make an affirmative tone. Throughout the speech, former President George W Bush strives to empower Americans by instructing them to remain resolute, but to “come back.” to [their] lives and routines.” He repeatedly uses the personal pronoun we and the common pronoun us to indicate that the people of the United States, who saw the event on television or experienced this event firsthand, were and still are caught up in this national tragedy. He implements this emotional appeal in his speech to engage all Americans, the people who live in the United States of America, regardless of their ethnicity, race, or culture, and to recognize that the American people have endured all of this together and will continue to move forward after this event with a stronger determination, stronger than ever. Furthermore, it implements personification to motivate and empower the American people. “Our nation, this generation, will remove a dark threat of violence from our people and our future” (Bush, 2001). “This generation,” once again synonymous with the American people, with their unwavering determination, will fight tenaciously for their freedom. He implies that the future of America and democratic freedom is in the hands of the American people: that the American people have the power to control their own destiny. The next sentence leads to the “philanthropically” democratic nature of America: “We will unite the world in this cause, by our efforts and by our courage” (Bush, 2001). This statement was followed by action only a few years later, when the United States intervened in the Iraq War, the Libyan Revolution, and other civil wars to ensure citizens' freedom from dictatorships, which in Islamic countries were militant groups, like Hamas and the Taliban. Finally, the president used anaphora, specifically a tripartite structure, stating that the American people “shall not weary,” “shall not falter,” and “shall not fail.” It implies that the American people will fight relentlessly for the establishment of world peace and democratic institutions, a promise that America has kept even in the face of its own national crisis..
