Edgar's sister Isabella soon falls in love with him and although Heathcliff doesn't like him, he encourages the relationship as a form of revenge against his brother. One day Heathcliff appears in a very friendly scene with Isabella, which leads to an argument between Edgar and Heathcliff. Being very jealous, Catherine falls ill. Heathcliff settles in Wuthering Heights, spending his time gambling with Hindley and teaching bad ways to Hareton. Hindley wastes his money and has to mortgage his house in Heathcliff to pay off his debts. Two months later Isabella goes to live with Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights and Heathcliff discovers that Catherine is very ill. He devises a plan and with the help of the housekeeper Nelly goes to visit her secretly. Catherine is pregnant and giving birth to Cathy and eventually dies. After Catherine's death Isabella leaves Heathcliff and travels to the south of England. There she gave birth to a son named Linton after her brother.
