In some cases these drugs can be used in combination with each other and are effective in treating manic episodes. Although the reasons why mood stabilizing medications appear to work in treating bipolar disorder are still unknown, they are used as the first line of treatment by a variety of doctors to treat this type of mental illness. Additionally, I would recommend that Patrick undergo additional psychotherapy including psychoeducation which will enable Patrick and his family to understand his mental illness and encourage them to deal with this illness effectively. The additional psychotherapy will also allow Patrick to understand the reasons why he needs to take and continue to take his medications, while also getting Patrick into the routine of taking his medications. Furthermore, this type of therapy will allow Patrick to solve any family, social, school or even work problems he may encounter in the present or near future. Therefore my recommendation for Patrick's treatment includes prescribing mood-stabilizing medications, starting with lithium first and also allowing him to undergo additional psychotherapy. In the film Patrick received treatment but stopped taking the medicine and only continued additional psychotherapy. Patrick was hospitalized and given lithium, Seroquel, Abilify, Klonopin and Trazadone. While hospitalized he was also given additional psychotherapy and made to take his routine medications, although he stopped taking them and pretended to take the medications by simply placing the pills under his tongue. The treatment he was given in the film to some extent coincides with the recommended treatment I have given, but differs in giving Abilify, Seroquel, Klonopin and Trazadone as drugs. Seroquel and Abilify are atypical
