Of Mice and Men: Chapter 1: Lennie and George went to work on a farm to become ranchers. They started to Weed. During the journey they decided to spend the night in the woods. Lennie went to gather wood so they could build a fire to cook their 3 cans of beans for dinner. They traveled so they didn't bring much with them and they probably didn't even have much money because they could never hold down a job. George told Lennie it was because of him. When Lennie returned, he did not return with firewood but with a dead mouse. George wasn't very happy, so he took the mouse from Lennie's hands and threw it into the woods. He is describing the setting: sensory/imaginary. Chapter 2: The next day, Lennie and George head to the ranch bunkhouse, where they are greeted by Candy, an old "spanner" or handyman, who has lost his right hand. The dormitory is an unadorned building where the men sleep on “canvas” and keep their few possessions in apple boxes nailed to the walls. George is dismayed to find a jar of lice powder in his bunk, but Candy assures him that he is in no danger of being infested, since the man who slept there before George was remarkably clean. George asks about the boss, and Candy reports that, although the boss was angry that George and Lennie hadn't arrived the previous night as she expected, he can be a "pretty nice guy." Candy talks about how the boss gave the men a liter of whiskey for Christmas, which immediately impresses George. Chapter 3: At the end of the workday, Slim and George return to the dormitory. Slim has agreed to give one of the puppies to Lennie, and George thanks him for his kindness, insisting that Lennie is "dumb as hell", but is neither crazy nor evil. Once people saw them dancing they had the opportunity to buy them. The relationship between Bernice and Marjorie was that Marjorie thought she was so cute. He decided to try to help Bernice do the same thing. She was jealous of everything Marjorie had. Marjorie was the one all the boys wanted. Marjorie didn't really think about other people's feelings. He knew one thing and one thing only (popularity). She wasn't used to socializing with people who were "not like her." I honestly don't think a person should be like anyone else. Being yourself is being unique in your own way. This is what defines you to make you. For the most part though I think they were kind to each other and understood each other.
