According to an Oxford Journals article, "There is substantial evidence for the heritability of obesity, and research into both rare and common forms of obesity has identified genes with significant roles in its etiology "(Genetics…). Let's say a parent is doing everything they can to ensure their child lives a healthy lifestyle, but the child still faces obesity issues. Why should the parent be held responsible? Especially if genetic factors are involved in the cause of the child's obesity. The Oxford Journals article also states: “Heritability estimates for obesity are high…” (Genetics…). Some children cannot control the fact that they are obese. Even if the child does physical activity and eats healthily, he cannot control his genetic makeup. In this case, whether the child would become obese was already determined before birth. Obesity is associated with numerous health risks such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung disease and some forms of cancer (genetics…). Most parents would rather have a genetically healthy child than a child who has to suffer the negative effects that obesity will cause throughout their life.
