Topic > I had kind of promised myself I wouldn't let another family go through the hardships I saw my parents go through, and Canada had the largest multicultural population. I find that I will be more successful in helping people not only from my community, but many others from different communities to become a social worker. My personal experiences influenced my personal decision to become a social service worker because of the theories and practices surrounding individuals and social change. Although I have long been engaged in these processes of growth and change, I have learned more ways of working with groups, navigating and changing the social system with families, and understanding how power structures impact society, groups, and individuals. By taking the time to understand how to better support people through change in Canada, I realized that knowledge of local systems can be one of the most useful tools for social service providers.
