Topic > Museums are Temples - 831

Throughout history, as Duncan P. Cameron stated in his article Museum, a Temple or a Forum, museums have often been considered what one might call a temple. Museums have housed ancient artifacts to glorify cultures and present them in a way that educates the public. As for the question, are museums important for societies? The answer would be absolutely. Because museums offer a unique aspect that nothing else could offer. The internet can only get one so far. You cannot see the object in person or get close to it. Online information is not as credible as that of a public institution, such as a museum. Museums are required to provide factual information about the pieces of their collections on display. Furthermore, why would a museum want to mislead its visitors, when it simply works to please the community? As history would present, museums have grown to symbolize a greater place in society than ever before. They often define cities and present information that may have been lost over time. The museum has assumed the position of peacekeeper and therefore its role would be to inform others for generations. Regarding the Ethics Bowl scenario, a scenario emerges that specifically designates museums as holders of ancient cultures and presents them in modern contexts. The British Museum became the owner of some ancient marbles from the Parthenon in Athens in the early 1800s. They thought they would become a permanent part of their collection without worrying about the origin of the purchase. However, the marbles were able to purchase before the Ottomans relinquished complete control or were even aware of what was happening. As the story goes, a man named Elgin, supposedly received control over the marbles and took... middle of paper... eum, more than half the people around the world wouldn't know or even have access to what the world has to offer. Since many people cannot travel due to financial restrictions, they can go to the local museum in their city and educate themselves. Many people may discover a future career path or story that may be relevant to a visitor's personal life that they would not have discovered without museums. The immense educational possibilities that museums offer alone contribute to their merit. Additionally, artists rely on museums to promote their work or on artists' families who own their works after their deaths. Museums represent an opportunity to expose and educate the public in their love of art. Museums are home not only to history, but also to many exhibiting artists whose artistic influences and defining styles will be able to influence future generations to come.
