Topic > What employers look for in employees - 1285

Employers today look for many skills in workers. There are many reasons why workers can't find work or get fired, but there's a reason this is happening. This reason is that many employers need people with good skills, qualities and attributes. There are many workers out there who don't have the skills needed in today's workforce. Well, things will change and this is where career and job counselors will come into play. “For years, employers have been aware of employee engagement and retention issues in their workplaces. As the Millennial generation (also commonly known as Gen-Y and includes births from 1982 to 2000) grows in the workforce and Baby Boomers retire, managers and HR professionals will need to develop new engagement models that keep account of the generational differences between baby boomers and millennials (Gilbert, 2011). “According to the article “THE MILLENNIALS: A NEW GENERATION OF EMPLOYEES, A NEW SET OF ENGAGEMENT POLICIES” research was conducted that shows that baby boomers are the largest generation of workers, who have organizational memory, trust and willingness to work longer hours.(Gilbert, 2011) what this means in the current workplace is that many baby boomers retire early or leave their jobs because they do not have the skills required in the current workplace skills, qualities and attributes that workers need in the workplace today. Also, how does this affect career and job consultants. Important skills required in the workplace today are: communication skills, flexibility , ability to adapt to new technologies, positive attitude, thinking skills and teamwork skills Communication skill is very important... middle of the paper... so, as a single mother or father with young children , not having a place to keep them is another barrier. So in some cases it's hard but in the end it's worth it because you will have new skills and the old skills will become new again. You will also have a better job that will support your family. Overall, a career and employment consultant's role in all of this is to help clients acquire those skills that are important in the workplace and tell them that many employers are looking at these skills. As a career and job consultant, it is your job to help clients understand the skills they have because when possible in the workplace it is explained to them in a different way. If you get clients who want to upgrade their skills or those who don't have the required skills, as a consultant you could point them to free programs where they could upgrade their skills.
