Literature ReviewIntroductionRecidivism refers to the tendency of released prisoners to return to criminal activities. It is measured based on the frequency with which released convicts return to prison for new crimes. The rates reflect the effectiveness of established programs that focus on integrating released inmates into society (Schmalleger, 2007). When rates are healthy, it means that the programs in place are working well in helping the offender curb criminal activity. The importance of correctional programs cannot be understated by any means. Programs, both in prison and out, are effective in saving the nation a huge sum by providing public safety and taxes (Pollock, 2004). Thesis Statement Rehabilitation programs aimed at reducing recidivism are beneficial to the individual and the government. Research Question: What role do rehabilitation programs play in helping to reduce recidivism? Different programs have a different impact on reducing recidivism rates. Effective programs that help reduce recidivism rates focus on three primary problems affecting inmates in prison and after their release. They include substance abuse, employment and education services. There is a need for most programs to address these problems as they are the most pervasive and likely push offenders to re-offend. Substance Abuse Treatment Programs In many countries, particularly the United States, substance abuse is a serious problem affecting the majority of the prison population. The same problem persists when offenders are released. The chances of a new addiction are high and will likely increase recidivism rates. This threat often poses others… mid-paper… helpful. Since they are free, proper parole supervision is needed to monitor their situation. Offenders are likely to face many problems that could lead them to reoffend. Their survival and expected behavior may be compromised due to the changing situation. It is important to control them by devising a program that advises them accordingly. For inmates struggling with drug abuse, the outside world can pose a challenge to getting the right medical attention. Programs should be such that they provide links so that those affected can continue to receive medical care even after serving their sentences. This helps reduce their re-dependence. Additionally, a program can recommend the best place to get counseling services or the best place to get services. This process involves case management and is a perfect example of good follow-up of a drug problem.
