The American Dream for most people is defined as being successful, having a large family, having a good job that allows you to provide for your family, owning a home and being sociable with your surroundings and connecting socially. The play was about Beneatha who wanted to become a doctor, but it was difficult for black people, especially black women of this period, to do so. His American dream was to have a great career. She was educated and determined to make her own choices. In the 1950s, education for African American women was looked down upon. The play mentioned the family's financial difficulties. Beneatha needed the funds to enroll, but her family didn't have the money. During this time African Americans and whites did not live in the same neighborhoods. Blacks did not have the same opportunities as whites due to different social classes. Although politics wasn't mentioned much in the play, Beneatha's character would have been an activist for blacks.
