Power is the ability of an individual or group to influence the behavior of another individual/group to do something they would not have done otherwise (Allen, 2010). Power is considered the ability of an entity to control its environment, with the behavior of other entities. For example, in the workplace, power is used as the primary way to direct and control people's behaviors towards achieving desired outcomes. Power can be obtained through personal characteristics and based on the position held within the organization. Authority is the position to which power is assigned by the organization (Allen, 2010). Therefore, the assistant accepts the position holder's authority because he believes it has been legitimately assigned to him. Authority can be present without power or power without authority. It includes the right to command a situation, give orders and expect them to be obeyed, and is accompanied by equal responsibility for one's action/inaction. Pondy's conflict model includes: latent, perceived, felt, manifest, and consequences of conflict (Allen, 2010). An example of a conflict that can occur in criminal justice would be when inmates complain of harassment by various correctional officers. According to Pondy's model in the first stage, latent conflict, the condition could be influenced by the inmates' previous complaints about the guards, which could occur due to the guards working long hours due to the lack of sufficient staff in the facility. phase, perceived conflict, the inmates start to feel really frustrated with the guards' action. The inmates' anger begins to increase with facial expression and they also exchange few verbal suggestions as time passes. In the third phase, that of felt conflict, there is tension whenever specific guards are around inmates. There are disagreements due to guards' hostile treatment of prisoners, and prisoners do not carry out household chores as required by the facility. They start blaming each other and the environment becomes unsafe. In the fourth phase, manifest conflict, the conflict opens when one of the guards is severely beaten. The inmates create a situation that attracts the guards around their cells. Inmates sold out their cell block while releasing others. Within a short time, a large group of inmates goes wild and runs around, leaving the others free. Some inmates will break windows and chairs, and others may start fires.
