Topic > Mental Health and Mental Illness in the Work of JD Salinger

Psychological disorders are also known as mental disorders in which multiple trends of behavioral or psychological symptoms can be observed that could impact an individual's life. For example, mental disorders “can be caused by one-time events” that may have occurred in a person's life, as stated on HelpGuide.org. As a matter of fact, according to statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health, “mental disorders are more common among adolescents than among adults.” Therefore, this disease can become a burden for those who suffer from it until the end of life if no therapy is received. In one of JD Salinger's literary works, he creates a seventeen-year-old fictional character, Holden Caulfield, who suffers from mental disorders. Holden is the narrator of the story who does not attach any importance to life and the future. In J.D. Salinger's novel Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield, the protagonist is a teenager dealing with various undiagnosed psychological disorders that may have affected his youthful life; therefore, his character can be understood through roots in the field of psychology. The character of Holden Caulfield is clearly identified psychologically in the opinions of some readers of the novel. For example, Holden's psychological disorders can be divided into different parts such as depression, anxiety, nervous breakdowns, post-traumatic stress disorder, and inferiority complex. All these disorders can help reveal Holden and his character in the novel. In fact, these disorders may explain his actions and the answer to why he might react the way he does. In other words, mental disorders can cause individuals to experience different emotions or may think differently than normal… middle of paper… fake people. Instead, they depress Holden and put him into another state that falls into the category of psychological disorders. Furthermore, Holden learns a lot from life that life requires many changes as one grows older and no one can stop him from doing so. However, mental disorders can be treated through cognitive behavioral therapy. As explained on HelpGuide.org, this therapy "helps [one] process and evaluate [one's] thoughts and feelings." This way it could help an individual and especially Holden himself with emotions and stress. Furthermore, it could help anyone suffering from psychological disorders to lower tension and live a happier life. As a final note, one day, everyone will grow up and realize that they are no longer children, but there isn't much difference in entering adulthood from adolescence other than accepting the fact that it's just a part of life.
