When Pharaoh applied eyeliner to himself, it was believed that he was also applying it to the gods of the past. Even reincarnated gods had to be protected from the sun. Like most things, eyeliner quickly became a fashion statement. It was first used by the Pharaohs and the upper class of Egypt, but then became a trend of the lower class. While it was originally meant to protect and connect, people eventually started using eyeliner to better define their eyes. “As millennia passed and architecture changed with them, the fashion for eyeliner remained constant, proving that the Egyptian people celebrated their religion with devotion that lasted for millennia.” (History of cosmetics) Time stuck in Egypt and eyeliner stuck, it only started to decline after the Romans conquered Egypt.
