Oscar Romero was born on August 15, 1917 in El Salvador. He was appointed archbishop of El Salvador on February 23, 1977. When Romero was appointed archbishop many priests were disappointed, especially those who openly aligned themselves with Marxism. On March 12, 1977, Rutilio Grande, a progressive Jesuit priest and personal friend of Romero who had created self-sufficiency groups among poor farmers, was murdered for what he was doing to help the community's poor. His death had a profound impact on Romero, who later stated: "When I looked at Rutilio lying dead I thought, 'If they killed him for doing what he did, then I too must go down the same path.' ". Romero urged the government to investigate, but his request was ignored. Romero began investigating to see how he could help the kidnapped farmers. Romero subsequently spoke out against poverty, social injustice, murder, torture and kidnapping as political prisoners. When he spoke about this he attracted many more enemies in his way because they did not want an archbishop to talk about these things and say that the government of El Salvador was not doing and this infuriated the people in power who decided to take action into their own hands. . Furthermore, Archbishop Oscar Romero used the broadcast as an oral newspaper: every documented case of murder, assault, disappearance or torture was broadcast – whether by the left or the right. To let everyone know what El Salvador was like and to show those in power that they weren't afraid to talk about what was happening and why they weren't doing their job to find out what was happening in the community.
